I live in Florida and my boyfriend lives in Colorado and our relationship is absolutely perfect for the both of us. We're both low-maintenance people and are in school so having time to ourselves is not necessarily a bad thing.
But something that you should take into consideration is how much money you have to travel. My boyfriend and I have enough money to travel to see each other often so that helps out the relationship A LOT.
Another thing to consider is how jealous you are/how much you trust the other person. If you have any insecurities about the relationship at all DON'T BOTHER, It WILL NOT work out.
And if you've met this guy online or something than I highly doubt it will work out. I feel that you need to have an established relationship physically (and, of course, emotionally) to make it work long distance.

Oh and you NEED a webcam, I can't stress that enough. Seeing my boyfriend's smile after not seeing it for two weeks even on webcam is so alleviating.

But my relationship is a perfect example that they do work, it just takes a certain type of person for it to succeed.

if you are strong in your relationship and trusting of each other it is easy to make it work. i was in a long distance relationship for 3 years. it can be simple.

i recommend buying a web cam if you don't already have one, it really helps just to be able to see their faces every day. it helps if you know similiar people, events, movies, etc. just so you have things to talk about and keep it interesting. set aside a regular time to see them (ie once a month, once every 2 months...) and be sure to call them nearly every night to talk about your day/whats new.

good luck (:
